The Differences Between Ceramic and Metal Braces

Braces have come a long way over the last few decades. They still perform the same function of aligning teeth for better oral health and more beautiful smiles, but they don’t all look the same anymore.

Traditional metal braces have an iconic look with metal brackets and wires connected by tiny rubber bands. For people who want a less obvious look to their braces, ceramic or plastic braces are now an option. These braces are very similar to metal braces, but the brackets and bands they use are clear. The only very noticeable parts of the braces are the metal wires.

Metal braces are cheaper than ceramic braces. Ceramic braces are mostly chosen for their discreet appearance. Metal braces are less prone to breaking than ceramic braces, so they are less of a hassle for orthodontists to work with and may come with shorter appointment times.

Otherwise, these two types of braces are very similar to each other. If you need a cheaper route to straight teeth, your best bet is to go with metal braces. If you need to look more professional or are worried at all about the look of your braces, you may want to choose clear ceramic braces.
